The Discovery Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a stimulating educational environment for Humboldt County. Our mission emphasizes interactive, open-ended discovery in the areas of science, art, culture, technology, and healthy living. Our goal is to help future generations prepare for the information age and a global society by letting them “try-on” a career, explore their universe, understand other cultures, discover their own abilities, appreciate their community, and most importantly…develop a lifelong passion for learning.

Our dream is to build a truly dynamic discovery museum for the people of the North Coast. We envision a vibrant facility that is a vital center for education, a wholesome resource for family recreation, and a unique cultural landmark for the community. Based on the model that people learn by doing, the Discovery Museum is the only interactive, hands-on learning institution in the region where people can actually touch, see, experiment, create, imagine, explore, and most of all – have fun. The joys of discovery can be experienced while exploring the solar system in the “sky”, building a scaled version of our downtown, producing an animated cartoon, climbing through a gigantic intestine, or experiencing the dynamics of water in a simulated river. A discovery museum appeals to the child in all of us and our mission is to keep that spirit alive. Discovery museums are fascinating places that fill a very important role in today’s collage of education. There are over 250 such museums across the country today and another 100 are in various phases of development. Our community has shown solid support for our Museum for over twenty years with record attendance figures and sound financial support. Our dream has been to provide the Museum with a permanent home in Old Town Eureka, where the Museum could play a vital role in the city’s redevelopment and economic development efforts. The Museum would become a unique destination point for visitors and travelers, a vital draw for families to the waterfront area, and become an educational bridge for the families of Humboldt County.

At the Discovery Museum, we know the impact that positive family experiences have on developing youth. Our mission is to provide such an experience, one that will last a lifetime and bring joy to the lives of the children and families we serve. Our goal is to show the world of possibility to the young minds of the future world leaders, ignite their curiosity, and spark their creativity. We are constantly evolving and improving upon the organization, bouncing back after facing near-closure after 27 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Run entirely by parents, teachers, and Early Childhood Development professionals, we are driven by the wonder of the children we meet and sounds of awe that fill the facility. The children and families we serve are the very heartbeat of the Discovery Museum.
